Upcoming Chelsea Reconstruction

Perhaps we should look at possible ways to improve the Jackson yard at the same time as we're redoing Chelsea. It would be an ideal time to relocate the backdrop toward Chelsea to give Jackson some additional space. If Chelsea cannot give up any space then we could also move the Chelsea fascia to recover the lost area.

It could also be a good time to start thinking about a lower level staging yard or return tracks. The entry could easily be incorporated into the Jackson/Chelsea redo. It would be the perfect time to work that into the reconstruction.

Protective clear plastic scenery shield

I’m trying to develop a project to install a protective plastic shield around the layout to save our scenery from damage. One approach that seems simplest would be to cut 6 inch wide plastic strips, maybe 4 feet long, and simply screw them to the fascia allowing a 2-inch overlap, so a 4 inch high projection above the layout. Seems like that would be enough. I’ve seen this approach used on other layouts. I’ve also seen much higher screens but I don’t think it’s necessary and would be a lot more expensive. We’ve got about 250 feet of fascia so would need an equal length of plastic strips. There are a few places where wider strips would be needed like the big trestle and the new Dexter road and creek where the fascia is cut down lower. We could do it for about $350. What do you think?

How and to whom are needed repairs to be reported? There are several malfunctioning swwitch motors and nobody I've talked to seems to know how to get them repaired. There are also several that need to be removed or relocated as part of the Dexter reconstruction.

Any suggestions?

Bruce Amrine

Train Operations

Anybody interested in "Operations"? On open house night we run trains back and forth with little purpose other than entertaining visitors, which is fine. I've never seen anybody use either of our two main yards for anything like train assembly or breakdown. and I've never seen any local freight operations.

I've had the opportunity to participate in operating sessions at another club and I think it a lot of fun. I'd like to see us start regular sessions, maybe once or twice a month during the day. Obviously, with our small membership, it would have to be limited but it could grow into something good.

Anybody else interested?

Bruce Amrine

Layout updates

Okay, so as some of you know, the club has gotten REALLY serious about moving Chelsea away from Dexter on the layout. After cooking up plans for the past six months, we started tearing out track and scenery during January and February of 2010. Mainline was ripped up this past week, and new mainline will be in place before the next open house on April 07. It's not a complete overhaul yet, just the mainline section between Dexter and the reverse loop switch. The other phases of mainline will happen over the next several months.

I've described a number of changes and additions to people in one on one conversations... let's hear from everyone on what you would like to see go in, now that we've officially broken ground.

Still going?

Hello to anyone out there, I've recently gotten back into trains and model railroading fairly heavily and I've been looking for a local club. The majority I've found seem to have been disbanded or changed location, name, etc. I see the forum and news letter haven't been used or updated in at least 2 years so I'm curious as to whether this club is still active. If so I'd like to come to the meeting next month assuming the rules for visitors remains the same, I live in Troy but work in Dearborn so the trip wouldn't be that bad. Please let me know, if you could, what the current status of the club is.

Thanks,
Aaron

Four Mile Lake Track Pan

I am interested in learning all that I can about the track pan at Four Mile Lake just outside of Chelsea. Specifically, what building materials were used in the construction. I'm thinking of granite paving blocks here. Can anyone help me?
